During our travels we have been
afforded the opportunity, sometimes with no option, to sample many unusual
foods and beverages. Somewhere were very good, while others

KAVA - A drink made from manioc.
Non-alcohol but has an odd numbing effect, possibly hallucinatory if you drink
enough. Originally made by virgins who would chew the manioc and spit
the juices into a bowl. Thankfully ours was not made this way.
Tastes like dirty sock water. The locals love it. FIJI |
|
WHITEHEAD FISH OMELET - The fish
are very small and served whole in the omelet. There are probably a
couple dozen of them which makes for several dozen eyeballs staring at you
when cutting into it. NEW ZEALAND |
|
ANTS - Yes, the insect. While
trekking in the Amazon, our guide split open a tree branch which was full of
small living ants. He explained how the Achuar eat the ants and that
they have a lemony taste. We each took a lick and yes they were very
lemony. Hours later Lisa was still picking them out of her teeth.

CHICHA - A native drink of the
Achuar. Similar to the Kava of Fiji, Chicha is made by the women of the
village who chew manioc and spit the juices into a bowl. The fluid is
heated and given time to ferment. Unlike the Kava, Chicha is still made
this way and when a bowl was handed to us the floating loogies were plain to
see. I have to admit we simply held the bowl but did not sample the
Chicha. Despite my brave talk, I simply could not get it anywhere near
my mouth without fear of retching. ECUADOR |
|
ALPACA - Similar to a lama, both
alpaca and lama are all over much of South America. The alpaca I had was
barbequed on a skewer and was delicious. Even Lisa thought it was pretty
good. CHILE |
|
I don't know what to call it, but
it is a colorless, odorless, gelatinous substance encasing an unknown meat
resembling Alpo. Commonly served on latin american airlines. One
bite was enough. LATIN AMERICA |
|
YAK - We had yak milk, yak butter,
yak cheese and yak steak. The steak was tough but not bad. The
milk, cheese and butter varied from edible to downright disgusting.
TIBET |
|
YAK BUTTER TEA - I decided to put
this in it's own category as it was particularly nasty. Actually, it
wasn't so much nasty as it was extremely rich. It is basically the same
as drinking warmed butter, except this butter comes from a yak. Likely
one of the yaks we saw on the property. Like all yak products, there is
some similarity to what we are used to but with an added funk. TIBET |

WATER BUFFALO - Pretty good, but at
this point my taste buds are shot. NEPAL |
